AUSTIN—Southwest Movers Association (SMA) today released the following statement regarding the passage of House Bill 19 by the Senate Committee on Transportation:
“For far too many years, the moving industry has watched as frivolous lawsuits have spiraled out of control, resulting in skyrocketing insurance rates across the state—often forcing businesses to close their doors. Today, the Senate Committee on Transportation stood up for Texas businesses by unanimously voting in support of HB 19.
SMA has seen first-hand the impacts abusive lawsuits have had on our members and we thank Chairman Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) and the Senate Transportation Committee for recognizing the need for reforms. In addition, thank you to Senate sponsor Larry Taylor (R-Friendswood) and House author Jeff Leach (R-Plano) for the countless hours spent negotiating a bipartisan piece of legislation—a true accomplishment!
We look forward to seeing the bill continue to advance in the legislative process.”
